Severe car crash burns can be life-threatening

On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accident

Motor vehicle crashes sometimes result in explosions or fires, both of which can lead to burn injuries. While many burns are minor, some are truly severe.

Most people are aware of first through third degree burns, but they may not know that there are burn degrees that are even more serious. Fourth through sixth degree burns are ones that extend beyond the skin and fat layers. These are serious injuries that are usually associated with life-long challenges and possibly death, depending on the areas and percentage of the body that has been affected.

Fourth through sixth degree burns

Fourth degree burns typically affect the skin, nerves and tendons. Charred skin is likely, and there may be bone showing through the injured area. The damage may also extend to the muscles. Some people who have fourth degree burns may need an amputation if the damage is severe.

Fifth degree burns result in white skin that looks charred. The damage extends through the skin, soft tissues and onto the surface of the bones. Organ damage and amputation are both likely for individuals who have this type of burn.

Sixth degree burns have a complete loss of skin in the affected area, although the victim may not feel pain because of the nerve damage that occurs. The bone is exposed and likely damaged. These burns are typically fatal because of the extent of the injury at issue.

Treatment for severe burns

Victims who suffer fourth through sixth degree burns always require immediate medical care because of the risks associated with them. They need extensive medical care and will have severe scarring if they survive. For some, that care will happen in a burn center where they can have around-the-clock care and get the procedures they need to encourage the best healing possible.

The lifetime costs for burn victims are often significant. They may opt to pursue a compensation claim if the cause of the crash that harmed them was another driver’s negligence. This must be done within two years of the injury due to the statue of limitations in Illinois. Working with a legal representative can enable these victims to focus on their healing while their representation seeks compensation on their behalf.
