Baggage handlers: Risks of this physically demanding job

On Behalf of | Aug 4, 2024 | Workers’ Compensation

Everyone who handles baggage at airports has a physically demanding job because they’re moving heavy and bulky luggage and other cargo on a daily basis. This set of circumstances creates a risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Thankfully, there are ways that this risk can be – largely – managed.

There are significant considerations that come into the picture when trying to keep these hard-working men and women safe. Understanding some of the risks and injuries they’re facing is the first thing that anyone involved has to do.

Heavy and bulky lifting

Airlines don’t only transport people’s luggage. They also handle shipped goods. All of the cargo that’s put into a plane can be heavy. Some cargo may also be bulky. These items are often difficult to lift, so it’s critical that baggage handlers have the proper equipment and protocol to do their job duties safely. This may include team lifting or specialized lifts to move baggage that’s not safe to move with only one person.

Fast-paced environment

Because flights are on tight time limits, baggage handlers have to move at a rapid pace. This can contribute to injuries because workers may try to rush. This can be combatted with the use of automatic baggage moving equipment, such as conveyor belts.

When equipment is used, it’s critical that all employees are trained properly on using these items safely. They should also be trained to watch what’s going on around them, which is vital for those who are working on the tarmac around the planes to load and unload the cargo.

Any baggage handler who suffers an injury at work should immediately get medical attention. Even if they don’t believe they’re seriously injured, trying to power through to finish their shift can lead to the injuries becoming worse.

Workers’ compensation should take care of the cost of medical care for these workers. If the injuries the worker suffers are significant, other benefits might also be possible. Affected workers should strongly consider seeking legal assistance for help with the workers’ compensation claims so they can focus on healing from their injuries.
